PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Teens on Target

Job Description: This position is responsible for the coordination of Teens on Target (TNT), a youth violence prevention/youth leadership program in Oakland. TNT trains urban high school students in East Oakland to be peer educators and advocates for violence prevention. TNT Members/youth leaders present workshops to middle school students and promote violence prevention policies to elected officials and the media. Teens on Target was established in 1989, and is a program of Youth ALIVE!, a non-profit agency dedicated to preventing violence and generating youth leadership in California communities. This position reports to the Director of Teens on Target.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and facilitate TNT meetings and training for TNT members/peer educators;
  • Assist Program Director and Program staff with development and modification of high school training and TNT Peer-Led Violence Prevention curricula;
  • Supervise TNT Members/peer educators in the implementation of the Teens on Target Peer-Led Violence Prevention Curriculum in local schools (obtain school & teacher permission for TNT Members to be excused from class when delivering TNT presentations);
  • Supervise Program Associate;
  • Prepare all necessary materials for high school meetings and middle school workshops;
  • Coordinate and provide transportation for peer educators to & from presentations;
  • Work with TNT members/peer educators and program/agency staff to plan and facilitate TNT advocacy activities (e.g., press conferences, petitions, letters to the editor);
  • Recruit and train new TNT members/peer educators at the beginning of each school year;
  • Participate in efforts with other providers, elected officials, etc. which are directly related to reducing youth violence;
  • Assist TNT Program Director with program evaluation activities;
  • Plan special events for TNT members, such as retreats and celebrations;
  • Assist in preparation of reports to funders
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience and commitment to working with at-risk youth
  • 2-3 years of program management/coordination experience
  • Excellent youth group facilitation skills
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Able to work well independently
  • Extremely punctual and reliable
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize
  • Must be able to present self and program in a highly professional manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team with agency staff, other providers and with school officials
  • Able to use computer programs, especially Word, Access and Excel
  • Violence prevention policy & media experience preferred
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
  • Flexibility to work some evenings & weekends
  • Must have insured car & DMV clearance
  • Must pass background check, as position works with minors

Salary and Benefits: $35,000-$40,000 DOE. Full time exempt position; occasional nights and weekends required. Benefits include: Medical / Dental / Vision / Vacation / Sick Leave / Retirement / Educational Reimbursement.

INTERVENTION SPECIALIST/CASE MANAGER
Caught in the Crossfire (a program of Youth Alive)

Job Description: This position is responsible for the provision of intensive case management and mentoring services provided by Caught in the Crossfire, a youth violence prevention/intervention program of Youth ALIVE! that provides peer-based bedside visits and intensive follow-up services to youth who have been hospitalized for violent injuries. Youth ALIVE! is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing violence and generating youth leaders in California communities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide intensive case management, mentoring and advocacy to youth involved in violence (youth who are hospitalized for gunshot wounds and other forms of violent injuries);
  • Provide support to family and friends of youth;
  • Provide client referrals to community service providers;
  • Maintain intensive follow-up contact with clients, family, friends and service providers through frequent home visits and telephone contact;
  • Document consistently and accurately in records all contacts with clients;
  • Represent Youth ALIVE! to the media, public officials, community leaders, etc. on strategies to prevent gun violence and improve services to youth;
  • Participate in violence prevention efforts with other providers as assigned;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to working with youth;
  • Knowledge of urban youth issues, specifically youth violence;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to take constructive criticism and work well with supervision;
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations;
  • Punctual & extremely reliable; Highly organized and detail-oriented;
  • Must be able to present self and program in a professional manner;
  • Flexibility to work some evenings & weekends;
  • Ability to work in stressful situations;
  • High School Diploma or GED required; B.A.or B.S. preferred;
  • Must have reliable car and DMV clearance;
  • Applicants with personal experience in overcoming violence/ violence-related injuries/ the criminal justice system are especially encouraged to apply.
