Jelani Avant works with young people transitioning out of the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center. She seeks to help clients remain outside of the justice system for good. Her mentorship philosophy is to hold youth accountable for what she knows they can do. She says her work is challenging, but even more it is rewarding; the joy comes in the small steps clients take toward getting back to life: a return to work or school; getting a driver’s license or a new, safe place to live. Jelani holds a B.A. in Psychology in Human Services from the University of Phoenix, where she is also currently pursuing a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy.
