Forward. Small steps or big. That’s the direction Pathways Intervention Specialist Tino Ratliff helps his young clients move in: forward in life, forward toward safety. Tino ttino picook a path to Youth ALIVE! that prepared him well for helping youth who are just emerging from the justice system. He comes from a tight-knit Samoan family where he became comfortable being the person people came to for advice. After graduating from St. Mary’s College in 2002 and moving to the East Bay, Tino spent 13 years working in health education for youth and young adults, at UCSF New Generation Health Center. After a year as a teacher in Oakland, Tino brought his concern for young people and his natural counseling abilities to Youth ALIVE!. He likes to keep his clients busy and engaged in positive things, so that they are less exposed to violence, so that they see alternative opportunities they might not have even realized were out there. He loves to see them make progress, whether it’s getting a good grade, a driver’s license, or getting – and staying – off probation. Coming from the Mission and the Bay View, great neighborhoods that have seen more than their share of poverty and violence, Tino lost friends to gun violence; he understands the reality and the challenges of growing up in a hard-hit community. “These kids have been put in a bad situation,” he says. “They didn’t chose it, but they get judged for it. We turn that around. We celebrate the little accomplishments that get you to that big goal.”
