Mario Savio (1942 – 1996)

Update as February 20. 2019

This event has been rescheduled. Join us on Wednesday, March 13th.

We were thrilled to learn that Youth ALIVE!’s Teens on Target program is a recipient this year of the 2018 Mario Savio Young Activists Award. Mario Savio was the great Berkeley advocate for free speech and human rights who became known in the mid-1960s as a spokesperson for the Free Speech Movement. The impact of his work and the Free Speech Movement continues to this day. Presented by family and many admirers of Savio and what he fought for, the award is given each year “to a young person (or persons) with a deep commitment to human rights and social justice and a proven ability to transform this commitment into effective action. The recipients should have demonstrated leadership ability, creativity, and integrity…” We are humbled by this recognition. The award will be presented to a TNT youth leader in Berkeley at the ASUS Student Union on DATE TBD, along with a grant for the program. There will also be a human rights lecture by former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. Past lectures have been delivered by Elizabeth Warren, Angela Davis and Cornel West.
