Dymond Garrett is Glad You're Listening
TNT Youth Leader on #NeverAgain
TNT youth leader Dymond Garrett has written a searing but hopeful piece for Youth Radio about the #NeverAgain movement, growing up around violence, and the frustration felt by those who have been talking about – and living with – gun violence for years.
“Some parts of Oakland have changed” writes Dymond, a sophomore at Castlemont High School in East Oakland now in her second year as a TNT youth leader. “It’s like a lot of people just kill each other for no reason now. Some people feel like they have to kill or get killed. Now a little kid as young as 11 years old can get a gun in less than 24 hours, because they want to feel safe.”
It’s a harsh reality, but one Dymond and other students in Oakland don’t accept with complacency. They are working for change, for peace and safety.
“I work with a program called Youth ALIVE!,” she writes. “We’re teens tackling this issue and dealing with it. I feel like now I’m part of a movement to make my community better for the next generation. It’s given me a bigger purpose…”
