Oakland is The Town, and a Village

Youth ALIVE! staff with Councilmember Reid.

In a Day of Action organized by Oakland District 7 Councilmember Treva Reid, service organizations from across the city spread out up and down eight blocks of International Boulevard yesterday to engage the community and to raise awareness of available assistance and support for everything from housing to violence prevention.

Youth ALIVE! was there, at 85th, with backpacks full of school supplies for kids and offers of help and information for anyone affected by violence, and by the root causes of violence. NBC Bay Area covered the event and featured comments from YA! Lead Violence Interrupter Tonyia “Nina” Carter, who said, “I’ve been waiting for a collaboration such as this. We have to empower the people who have been part of the problem,” said Carter. “We have to allow them to see us working from the other side, with influence, and fighting from another perspective.” See the entire NBC report here.
